What makes the milky way unique among galaxies?

There are billions of galaxies in the universe. Still, the Milky Way stands out in many ways since it has captured the imagination of humans for thousands of years, even though there are billions of galaxies in the universe. Though billions of galaxies exist in the universe, we stand out in many ways. It has a flat disk shape with spiral arms that twist outward from the centre. This shape is common among galaxies, but not all galaxies look like this. Some are elliptical, and others have irregular shapes. The Milky Way spans about 100,000 light-years across. That’s a considerable distance that’s hard to imagine. If you could travel at the speed of light, it would take you 100,000 years to go from one galaxy’s edge to another.

Moreover, another unique aspect of the Milky Way galaxy can be observed through its age. It is estimated that the galaxy is about 13.6 billion years old. This means it formed only a short time after the Big Bang, which is thought to have happened about 13.8 billion years ago. The Milky Way’s age has allowed it to develop structures and host many generations of stars.

At its heart lies a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A. This massive black hole weighs about 4 million times that of our Sun. While many galaxies have central black holes, the one in the Milky Way is particularly interesting to scientists because it’s the closest supermassive black hole we can study. The Milky Way’s composition is also unique. This mixture allows for ongoing star formation, which keeps our galaxy active and evolving. Some galaxies have used most of their gas and dust, so they can’t form new stars anymore.

Our galaxy’s location in the universe also makes it unique. The Local Group is on the outskirts of a larger structure called the Virgo Supercluster. Our galaxy, the one we inhabit, is part of the Virgo Supercluster, a collection of galaxies gravitationally bound together by their gravitational pull, along with several others. Our galaxy is located about 2.5 million light years from the centre of the Supercluster.

At least 4.5 billion years from now, these two galaxies will collide, but what happens when they do, when the collision occurs, will be a theatrical event that will transform them into something very different from what they were before. Several smaller galaxies orbit our galaxy, so it would be appropriate to mention that they are also valuable and well worth mentioning. A few hundred light years from the centre of our galaxy, we’re situated in a relatively quiet neighbourhood, which allows us to observe the universe with relatively little interference from galaxies.
